Soundpeace in Tucson

We are back from the Tucson gem and mineral show. Elizabeth was shopping there for a week, and I went for a few days for my first trip. I had no idea what to expect other than it would be huge. And it was. Exhibitors set up in clusters of hotel chains throughout the older, industrial end of Tucson. Rooms get rented out to exhibitors whose merchandise spills out into courtyards and onto sidewalks.Tents get set up in parking lots and grassy areas. The ambiance felt to me like a flea market, however the items being sold were often dazzling in their beauty and uniqueness. It was a strange juxtaposition of beautiful crystals and jewelry being sold in what felt like a used car lot. There was a lot of bargaining, lots of different languages spoken and literally TONS of crystals and rocks. Some crystals (low grade) were even being sold by the oil drum full. There were also some giant exhibit halls to visit but we didn't make it to those. It was fun, and an eye opener.We are looking forward to unpacking what we found there but I must admit it feels like a tiny amount (and it is) relative to what we saw. It took a lot of self restraint not to go crazy. One could stand in one spot without moving one's feet and pointing to this and that spend $100,000 in some places. Amazing.

"Alchemy of Light" , the Angel Scupture

Kevin Christman's "Alchemy of Light" angel sculpture that was on loan and displayed in the Soundpeace garden is being shown for sale at a fundraiser for the Make A Wish foundation at the "Night of A Hundred Angels" exhibition at the Cottage Gallery in Laguna Beach, California. We were sad to see the Angel go but happy for Kevin and the Make A Wish Foundation.

There is hope, however that we can bring another edition of the Angel to our garden, this one to be permanent and owned by the City of Ashland. An anonymous donor has offered to match 1/2 of the purchase price of $68,000, so if we can raise $34,000 we may be graced by her presence again.

New Age Trade Show

Believe it or not there is such a thing as a New Age Trade Show. Elizabeth and I just attended. We shopped, learned, met old friends and were inspired and infused by a rousing talk from Michael Beckwith. Here are a few pics. We found a lot of fun new things for Soundpeace that we'll be featuring here as they come in.

We arrived via teleportation... how else to get to the show? Actually this was a block from our lodging.

For lodging we stayed smack dab in the middle urban/ suburban sprawl. EVERY store or restaurant was a national chain, houses were cookie cutter in developments with names like "the Ranch" which seemed anything but, traffic was non stop, big box stores, mega churches, sidewalks with no one walking on them meandering thru vast expanses of "open space" neatly mowed grass. I was truly appreciative of being able to live in the Rogue Valley and Ashland especially where all is not homogenized. The saving grace of our time in Denver outside of show hours was a little walk near our lodging on one of those empty sidewalks in the evenings. There were little rabbits everywhere, in the Hooter's parking lot, on the Starbucks patio and this one I took a picture of in the darkness in the freshly mowed grass. When I looked at the photo later we found an Orb just above and behind it. It's a little hard to see here on the blog, but fitting for a trip to a New Age Trade Show.

Participants are already asking when he'll come back. Suren is very in demand so we are working on that now, hoping for a spring date or again in the fall.

Actually Elizabeth is giving Ruth a taste of what we'll be demonstrating this "1st Friday art walk". We're doing our best to get the word out about the Healing with Tibetan Singing Bowls Classes and Healing Sessions that we are sponsoring in early October. We are pleased so far with the interest and sign ups for this workshop and the healing sessions.

I love it when someone drifts in to Soundpeace and finds the perfect book. Today a gentleman from San Diego was passing through and it happened to him. He found the Way Of Mastery which happens to be one of our best selling books, ( $34.95 hardcover with CD). This book is published by the Shanti Christo foundation , headquartered here in Ashland and is a favorite of Course in Miracles groups around the country. Saint Joseph, Home Seller

Yesterday a customer came in looking for a Saint Joseph statue to aid in the selling of her home. I overheard Elizabeth telling this story about her landlord John and his sister and Saint Joseph.

The market in Murietta Springs, California was in serious decline when John's sister decided to put her house on the market. It was a big house and bad timing as nothing in the area was selling. Elizabeth had mentioned to John that it couldn't hurt to buy a Saint Joseph statue and send it to her. If it worked it would certainly be worth the $9.95 investment. So John sent the statue, she opened the gift, put it on a shelf and later that day got an offer and sold her house. She hadn't even got around the the ritual prayer and burying of the statue. Needless to say, when John heard the news he asked the favor that his sister return the statue back to him so he could use it as well. This was not to be, however, as the statue had now earned a permanent home with his sister.

The tradition of burying Saint Joseph began in the 18th century in Europe when communities of nuns would pray to Saint Joseph asking for help to find land for their convents. They would bury a medal when they prayed. As testimonies of success in finding land spread, the custom changed from burying medals to burying statues. Here at Soundpeace we've heard several anecdotal stories of success with Saint Joseph from folks of various religious and non religious backgrounds. Should the day come I want to sell my house, I will definitely turn to Saint Joseph for a little extra help.

First Friday Aromatherapy

At Soundpeace we don't have a whole lot of aromatherapy products, but what we do have is formulated by local holistic healer KG Stiles. KG is a highly respected expert in her field and will be at Soundpeace this "first Friday" (March 5th from 4:30 to 6:30) to share her passion about aromatherapy and demonstrate the products we have on sale here. Among the products she'll be sharing information are my favorites, her aromatherapy sprays. Sitting on my counter at home is Rapid Immune Defense for cold and flu protection. One of the local high school wresting coaches told me he swears by this and sprays the van carrying his team to meets to keep everyone healthy. She also has formulated organic sprays for Abundance, Energy Clearing, sacred healing and anointing (called Holy Oils) and the cleverly named Mercury Retrograde Retro-Fit.

She'll also be demonstrating her Aromatic Remedies. These are aromatherapy blends that have been charged with Crystal Energy and healing mantras. To learn more come by Soundpeace this "first Friday".

The Fifth Agreement by Don Miguel Ruis

I just finished reading The Fifth Agreement by don Miguel Ruiz and don Jose Ruiz. About 9 years ago The Four Agreements came out. I read it at that time and after all these years I have to say it is still one of the most practically helpful books to me. Many a time I have said to myself, for example, "don't take it personally." (Agreement # 2) when a particular button of mine was pushed. So I started The Fifth Agreement as soon as it came out.

The book is written in a very simple and clear style. The first part of the book is a review of the four agreements. I am so glad the authors decided to do this. The agreements came to me fresh again with this reading. The first four agreements are presented in such a way that I felt my understanding was new and deeper. The rest of the book is about the fifth agreement, its integration with the other four and their integration into one's life. I'm not about to attempt to summarize the agreement here, that would do an injustice. However, for me, a major theme of the book is about developing awareness of what is Truth and what isn't.

As I read this book I felt comforted, inspired and challenged. I highly recommend it. To pay $19.95 (or $16.95 with a Soundpeace book club membership) is in my opinion bargain for the wisdom contained in the pages of this little book.

Solstice Sunrise 2009

So begins the return of the light. One can only hope the light of peace will shine brighter in the world as well. We at Soundpeace have just got in some beautiful "peace cards" from a nonprofit that is trying to help the millions of Iraqis who were displaced because of the war there. And just today we got in a selection of individual handmade cards. These cards are made by a little company called Bits-A-Paper and are from right here in Ashland. Making incense for 12 generations

We just learned some interesting facts about the Shoyeido Incense we stock here at Soundpeace. We knew it was high quality and that it was made of pure incense only (no bamboo stick in the middle like most incense has) of natural ingredients. What we didn't know was that Shoyeido has been in business for 300 years and is still based where it was founded in Kyoto, Japan. We also didn't know that ownership has remained with the Hata family that whole time, 12 generations.
Shoyeido incense is the most subtle of the incense we carry and creates less smoke. Pictured above is a gift pack of three different scents, including a burner that retails for $9.95. For a limited time we also have a gift pack with 5 scents and a burner that retails for $11.95. It's a great deal on some fine incense.

"Alchemy of Light"

"Alchemy of Light" is a limited edition, life-size bronze angel created by local sculptor and painter Kevin Christman. The sculpture depicts a crouching female figure with her eyes closed and hands cupping the air in front of her in a gesture that portrays simultaneously outward healing and an introspective listening and receiving. The wings appear to have been sewn on suggesting that she is a human that has become divine in nature through her service to others. Instead of being a lofty distant archetype separated from humanity she represents one of us here and now.

"We are planning for the installation to happen on September 11th at 10 am with an unveiling and ribbon cutting ceremony to follow, with several community leaders speaking about the sculpture, community, healing, (very fitting for the date) and blessing the site.

The sculpture represents to me the idea of healing through going inward, truly listening and being still. I think of it as a resting point to find comfort much like walking the labyrinth or sitting by the creek.

It feels fitting that the two year delay with installing the sculpture, due to the sign ordinance, has serendipitously resulted in it's being installed on Sept. 11. It feels very right."

Notable new books

This week at Soundpeace when we opened our shipment of books three great new titles jumped out. The first was Taking the Leap: Freeing Ourselves From Old Habits and Fears by Pema Chodron, $21.95. I just started reading it last night. She comes from a Buddhist perspective but her writing is clear and simple and one needn't know a thing about Buddhism to understand. This book, like many others is about creating peace of mind. What strikes me is the clarity, simplicity and practicality of her thoughts on the subject. I look forward to continuing my read.

The next title Guardians of Being ($18) pairs quotes of Eckhart Tolle (author of the Power of Now) and illustrations of Patrick McDonnell (creator of the Mutts comic strip). It can be 'read' in one sitting but really this is a book to pick up for inspiration or a laugh. It would make a great gift for any lover of animals whether or not they have knowledge of or openness to the teachings of Eckart Tolle Here are a couple of quotes (made better with the drawing they are paired with),

"I have lived with many Zen masters, all of them cats."

"You just watch the tail... with some dogs you just look at them -- just a little look is enough -- and their tail goes ... 'Life is good! Life is good!' And they are not telling themselves a story of why life is good. It's a direct realization."

Next book is The Vortex, Where the Law of Attraction Assembles All Cooperative Relationships, by Ester & Jerry Hicks, $16.95. Haven't read this yet but at a glance I can see this is bout looking at relationships , ALL relationships, from a very DIFFERENT point and expansive of view. This is the 3rd book in thier Law Of Attraction series. The 1st was the Basics, the second Money and the next will focus on Spirituality, due to be released in 2011.

Who is this man and what is he doing with a shovel in the Soundpeace garden?

It's Kevin Christman and he is preparing the foundation for the long awaited Angel Statue. Man, you have to give Kevin credit, not only for being an amazing artist, but for his patience and persistence. Almost 2 years ago he contacted us about placing a most beautiful bronze statue of an angel in our garden. We loved it and so did our landlord. We gave him the go ahead but the city of Ashland said no way. Well, Kevin worked with the beauracracy, the arts commission and the city council and was a catalyst in getting the city to update its laws. Soon the statue will be in place and we invite one and all to take a look.

New Music

Hopefully you, our customers, haven't noticed that until recently the new music releases featured at Soundpeace have been a little sparse. Well, without going into details there have been some upheavals in the music distribution world. Finally things are sorting out and we are now, once again bringing in lots of new music. There is quite a variety, chant, world, relaxation, lounge, drumming etc.

And of course, you can sample all of it on our listening stations.

Always popular is Snatam Kaur. Here is her newest release, "Liberation's Door" very beautiful, calming, meditative, heartfelt. Click this link to sample the CD.

I put "Girls and Boys" on on my CD player and it is staying there. It's by indie/pop artist Ingrid Michaelson. It's a little too rowdy for in store play but of course you can listen to samples on our in store listening system. Fun.
One new title that has become a favorite of all of us here at Soundpeace to play while working is "Eagle" by Mamer. Mamer is a young Kazak singer from China's northwest grasslands. You can sample here.

Summer Visitors

Summer can be fun at Soundpeace in that one never knows who will walk in the door.
Last week, Cheri Huber author of How You Do Anything Is How You Do Everything and many other books stopped by.

This week we met Dean and Dudley Evenson. Dean and Dudley are pioneers of the genre of healing, relaxing and for lack of a better term New Age music. If you've ever had a massage and wondered what that incredibly soothing music was that was playing, chances are it was something by Dean. They've been doing this for 30 plus years.

Another surprise guest was Kathy Tyler, co creator, with Joy Drake, of the Angel Cards.

She was living in Findhorn when they created a game called the Transformation game. The idea was to energetically share with the planet the good things that were happening at Findhorn. Originally the game squares were big enough to stand on. At some point it was made into an actual board game and one of the components of the game were the angel cards. At the end of each game people would draw a card from the Angel Cards and this was a favorite moment. A couple of years later it came to them to make the Angel Cards in and of themselves available and the rest is history. Here's Kathy.

New Merchandise Highlights

We've gotten in a lot of new merchandise in the last few weeks at Soundpeace. Here are a few highlights.

Stone Gizo Monk statue, protector of children, $79

These over the shoulder bags are made in Nepal, have an adjustable strap, velcro closures and many designs including the Om and peace sign. $23.

You need to see this handfired Raku pottery to really appreciate its beauty. Each piece is one of a kind and made by San Francisco bay area craftsman Jeremy Diller. In the first picture the small angels sell for $9.95, the larger for $18.50. In the background you can kind of see wedding jars which would make a great gift for anyone getting married. The little jars in the second picture are made to be dream catcher jars.

Here is another item where the picture just doesn't do it justice. A mother and daughter team living in Fargo, North Dakota make these beautiful tiles (some hang and some don't) with inspirational and whimsical sayings. Another great gift item. $18.50.

New Sage Source

We recently met Tashka Shaman and his daughter at the International New Age Trade Show in Denver. His effervescent spirit drew us in and the quality and background of his products sold us. He is bringing in sage and related products from indigenous people living in a remote mountain area south of the Mexican/USA border in Baja California. Materials are ecologically gathered by the Kumeyaay Indians on their respected land in the Cochimis Indian Reservation. Raw materials not from the immediate area are carefully selected from Indian tribes or from those who respect Native Americans and Mother Earth.

It is exciting to me that a purchase of these products helps provide for the basic needs of the tribe and any profits are dedicated to enhancing living conditions and adding value to their cultural heritage. Love Never Dies...

This is Lyn Munsey. She has been a loyal Soundpeace customer for years. We love her.

Lyn, who does healing work and is a spiritual intuitive came in recently and shared with us a message that she received in her work that we thought would be nice to share here with the approach of Mother's Day.

With the permission of Lyn's client here is what came through. The following is a personal message to a daughter from her loving Mother who passed April 6th, 1989.

"The feelings of being overwhelmed and failure always sit in a Mother's heart from time to time with the question, 'What could I have done different?'

Life unfolds in a natural way and sometimes solutions that you cry for are slow in appearing, for it could be necessary to live into the answers.

You are doing the best you can do. Never doubt yourself and the love for your family.

Just because it seems for you that everything is having a snowball effect, every snowball will eventually melt and you will be able to see the trail of light and its meaning as a life lesson.

Just know that you have the love of family beating within your heart for our love is eternal. I am always with you and hear your desires, a proud mother who is always surrounding you with loving energy.

The snowball will melt, the sorrow will pass and another season will bring another life adventure to experience.

Eternal love my child."

By the way, Lyn, who received the message above is a woman of many talents. After years in the corporate and business world she moved to Southern Oregon and has since found herself involved in entirely different realms of work. We at Soundpeace all know Lyn and find her to be a warm, gentle and generous person. He has heart

This heart is carved of orange alabaster and stands 4" tall. It is hand carved by a man named Leo. Leo is a carver of hearts. Here are a few more examples, although the pictures don't begin to do these pieces justice.

These hearts and heart pendants are all one of a kind and hand carved. Prices start at $75.

Carving hearts started as a hobby for Leo and a way to help him heal his own heart. On a visit to Ashland to attend a LuminEssence workshop he discovered Soundpeace and we discovered him and we've been selling his hearts ever since. He has just passed through and left us with some new pieces and will soon be sending us some that he is working on now.

This is Para. He is a frequent visitor and customer of Soundpeace. Since he isn't speaking today (see t-shirt) let me say I imagine one of his missions in life is to put a smile on people's faces. He passes the day giving gifts to strangers and friends alike, the result being a warming of the heart of the recipient. Here is what he gave me today, a small card that says thank you on one side and that he has written the word "love" on the other. The card has a little window that opens and inside it there is a quote that says, quite appropriately, "All we can ask in our lives is that perhaps we can make a little difference in someone else's." (Lillian Davis) That is definitely what Para is up to. PS. The cards are called Little Miracle cards and there are 30 in a box. The idea I think is that a box will give a month's worth of inspiration. Para is lucky if a box lasts a day.

Fire and Water

This week we have a couple of new and unusual things in.

Fire... Flying Wish Paper.
Great for a ritual alone or with others. On a piece of paper you write down a wish or prayer, then you light it on fire and watch it burn down until it dramatically flies into the sky. There is a video of how it works here. Sells for $15.95.

Water... some local practitioners of the healing arts came to us requesting we carry an energy clearing spray developed by a Russian scientist living here in the Rogue Valley.
This is "energized structured water" and has no chemicals or fragrances. A woman came in yesterday who already uses Clean Sweep to buy a bottle to keep in her purse. She uses it everywhere, restaurants, her car, her bedroom. $12 for a 2oz spray bottle.

The Prayer Flag is back

Our Tibetan Prayer flag is back. Last Tuesday, the Ashland planning commission voted unanimously to fix the local sign code that, in effect, made our flag a local outlaw. We're happy. May all beings be blessed with peace, compassion, strength and wisdom.

Beginnings

A rainbow like this one greeted us 18 years ago after signing the papers that transferred owner/stewardship of Soundpeace to Stephanie Cook and me. We took it as a good sign.

Soundpeace was started originally in 1985 or 1986 by a woman named Miriam. She came up with the concept of a shop called Soundpeace selling spiritual books and new age music. Some of the books she stocked were written in Sanskrit. The music was all on cassette tapes and could be previewed at a table that had four tape decks with headphones. Soundpeace was unusual at that time in that you could listen to music before buying it.

She sold the store to a couple named Agnes and Duvon, we don't know exactly when. They ran it until the fall of 1990. Then Soundpeace closed and in its place a shop selling country style nic nacs opened for the fall holiday season. I had seen an ad that Soundpeace was for sale and not realizing it was closed called to inquire. But upon discovering it was packed up in a storage unit we didn't follow up on it. During this time we had been exploring the idea of opening a store in Ashland on main street with a focus on personal growth and spirituality. We were regular listeners of New Dimensions and Hearts of Space on public radio and Soundpeace was a perfect match for our interests. Our past retail experience was a little hippy clothing shop in Eureka Springs,Arkansas where we sold imports from India, Bali and South America.

In the new year Soundpeace reopened. We asked again if it was for sale and it was. In hindsight it is a good thing we were a naive as we were. We didn't know how to read a financial statement, for example, and if we had we probably wouldn't have bought the business. But the pull was incredibly strong and in spite of some difficult obstacles that tested our willingness we became the new owners.

We got a lot of help in the beginning. A former bookstore owner Ruth (I can't remember her last name) showed us how to keep track of book sales and book reordering using an index card system and a legal pad. Richard Miller (another experience bookseller) helped us to get the book room organized and was so kind as to go through the entire catalog of the country's largest metaphysical book distributor and recommend books we ought to stock. One of our first part time employees, Angela Gentle (also a reader of...soul purpose and spirit guides) helped us tune in to what the store wanted to become and was a font of ideas that helped us to broaden the store's appeal.

I never could have imagined in 1991 that I'd still be at Soundpeace in the year 2009. That was Way in the future. Wow! Many years, people, changes, blessings.... I am very, very grateful.
